flight into the air aboveKitty Hawk, North Carolina,NASA'S robotic

screensaround the world.
Less than 70 years after AIJolson'slandmarkperformance in the first
"talkie," The Jazz Singer,moviegoers marvel at thelumbering dinosaurs,
racing spaceships and talking@animals thatpopulate the silver screen.
Less than 30 years after the firstpersonal computer hit desktops in1,974,
businesspeople can checktheir stock quotes or chat with farflung family
members from theseven-pound machie perched ontheir lap.
And less than 10 years after thefirst web site was posted, millions of people
communicate, work, andshop without ever leaving theirliving rooms.

These advancements have forever Changed people's lifestyles: the way they work, the way they
play, the way They relate to their families andcolleagues.Devices that save time, money and effort
have paradoxically opened the door to competingcommitments and increasingly busier schedules.
As manymodern households juggle priorities within a dual incomefamily structure, time becomes
a most valuable commodity.As Lions Clubs lnternational moves forward info this new century, we
acknowledge these changes in the lives of our members and potential members. Individuals sim-
ply do not have the same amount of time to dedicate to activities outside of work and family as
they did in the past. lf is for these reasons that the association will be introducing a special club
to attract young adults to become involved in Lions. The New Century Lions Club program offers
These men and women The opportunity to provide service side by side with their peers in their
communities in a way that fits their lifestyles. This new type of club was unveiled at the lnternati-
onal convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, by President Behar.
CLUB SPECIFICS
Called New Century Lions Club to underscore itsimportance in our new millennium, the club is
seen as a magnet to attract today's quality young adults. lf is a club designed with Their lifestyles
and peer interests in mind. Accordingly, the New Century Lions Club is differentiated clearly from
a traditional Lions club in many ways including service activities,communications,atmosphere,
emblems and insignia.
A NEW GENERATlON
One critical distinction of the New Century Lions Club is member age: only qualified individuals up
to age 35 can be invited into membership. This way, New Century members will be in the company
of their peers from their own generation. The New Century age mix is also expected to draw Leos
(current and former). Combined with waiver of their charter fee, membership in a New Century
Lions Club gives Leos a natural pathway for continuing their involvement with Lions. Membership
is by in vitation and carries with if the full rights, duties,and responsibilities of a Lion.
A NEW lDENTITY
This exciting progrom allows New Century Lions Club members to differentiate themselves with
an identity that will oppeal their peer group. ln addition to a newly designed club pin and insignia,
New Century Lions have wide latitude over their choice and support of service activities and
meethig formats. Club reports are forwarded quarterly, via the lnternet. ln short, and key to
the New Century Lions Club's success, is club members'opportunity to express themselves on
their own termswithin an environment of their creation in which they feel comfortable.
A NEW OPPOATUNITY
Lions Clubs lnfernational has much to offer, such as the backing of the world's lagest service
organization.As members of Lions Clubs lnternational, New Century members will be able to take
odvantage of all the services the ossociation has to offer. At the club level, New Century Lions
will benefit from support and counsel of a Guiding Lion from the sponsoring club, and for thier
part, Guiding Lions and clubs who sponsor a New Century Lions club receive special recognition
fromthe assosiation.

As with traditional Lions clubs, New Century clubs must charter with 20 or more members.
New Century clubs will have seven years from charter date to reach for new, creative
opportunities, after which exemptions granted at time of chartering will end. From date of
charter and beyond, The New Century Lions Club brings with it the potential for injecting
new energy and ideas into its community, and into nearby Lions clubs as well. Just as our daily
lives have changed, so have The needs of our society. As an organization that serves The
needs of our ever-changing communities, if is vital that Lions understand these chollenges and
supporf our prospective members
